At South Bank Colleges, we are proud to see our students step into real world environments and thrive. Ronan Clifford, a T Level student studying Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction, has recently completed an outstanding industry placement that truly reflects the future of construction in action.
Over the course of 259 hours on site, Ronan became a valued member of the team delivering the Francis Barber PRU project with Baxall. He leaves behind not only a strong impression but also a clear example of what dedication and applied learning can achieve.

From the outset, Ronan was immersed in one of the most demanding phases of the project. Working in a fast paced and logistically complex environment, he demonstrated resilience, curiosity and a genuine enthusiasm for the industry. His contribution helped the team maintain momentum during a critical stage of construction.
Reflecting on his experience, Ronan shared how valuable it was to gain first hand exposure to the day to day operations of a live site:
“During my work experience, I got a really good feel for what goes on day to day on a construction site and how everything is managed.”
A key part of Ronan’s placement was the opportunity to observe and engage with a wide range of trades. From groundworks and bricklaying to scaffolding, internal walling and mechanical and electrical work, he developed a well rounded understanding of how different specialisms come together to deliver a project.
“Being on site meant I could see different trades up close, which gave me a much better understanding of how everything comes together.”
Beyond practical site exposure, Ronan also explored the logistical side of construction, supporting the preparation of work areas, organising materials and gaining insight into the coordination of deliveries and crane operations. He also attended weekly meetings, where he saw how careful planning and decision making keep projects on track.
“This experience really showed me how important teamwork and planning are when working on a big project like this.”
Ronan’s commitment, professionalism and eagerness to learn did not go unnoticed. In recognition of his efforts, he was given the unique opportunity to lay the final bricks on the Teaching Block, a meaningful moment that marked both his personal contribution and the successful completion of his placement.
We are incredibly proud of Ronan’s achievements and the way he has represented South Bank Colleges. His journey highlights the value of T Level placements in preparing students for successful careers, bridging the gap between education and industry.
We look forward to seeing what the future holds for Ronan as he continues to build his career in construction.
