As a laboratory technician apprentice, you’ll be working at the cutting edge of scientific and technical innovation, carrying out tests, managing lab equipment, and supporting scientific investigations across different departments.

What experience and skills will you gain?

Over the course of 24 months, you’ll combine hands-on experience in the workplace with academic study at college (typically one day per week). You’ll gain:

  • Knowledge of health and safety, quality control, and regulatory requirements (e.g. GMP, COSHH).

  • Core scientific understanding including chemistry, biology, statistics and genetics

  • Practical lab skills such as weighing, pipetting, chromatography, spectroscopy, and sample analysis.

*Competence in using laboratory equipment and instrumentation, including calibration and maintenance

  • Confidence in using Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), Microsoft Office, and data presentation tools.

  • Skills in scientific communication, teamwork, report writing and continuous performance improvement.

  • Experience handling and interpreting data, producing reliable results, and solving technical problems.

  • What do you need to apply?

    GCSE English and Maths at grade 4/C or above, or Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths

  • How will you be assessed?

    Written assignments, practical observations and portfolio building
