What experience and skills will you gain?
As an apprentice, you’ll build a wide range of knowledge and technical skills to prepare you for a career in dental technology:
• Core Dental Manual Dexterity : Get hands-on with traditional techniques such as model casting, making custom trays, producing bite registrations, and fabricating appliances like dentures, crowns, bridges, splints, and mouthguards. • Modern Digital Tools: Learn to use the latest technology, including digital scanning, CAD software, 3D printing, and milling machines. You’ll design and manufacture dental devices with precision using a variety of materials. • Lab Equipment Handling: Gain the know-how to manage laboratory tools—keeping them in top working condition through routine maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting. • Data Handling: Develop the ability to interpret results accurately, maintain thorough records, and assess data to support further research or adjustments. • Workplace Safety and Protocols: Understand essential health and safety procedures, including correct use of PPE, completing risk assessments, and maintaining a clean and safe lab environment.

What do you need to apply?
To apply for this apprenticeship, you’ll need: • Academic Background: A minimum of four GCSEs at grades 3–9, including English and Maths at Level 2 or equivalent. A solid foundation in literacy and numeracy is essential, as it supports your practical and theoretical learning throughout the course. • An employer in a dental laboratory.

How will you be assessed?
There will be a combination of multiple choice and written exams, portfolio work, interviews and practical assessments.
This Level 3 qualification aligns to the integrated nature of the End Point Assessment (EPA) plan. Employers and training providers will ensure that an apprentice meets the requirements of the integrated EPA.

Where can this course take you?
Completing this apprenticeship will earn you a Level 3 Laboratory Technician (Digital Dental) qualification, opening the door to employment in dental laboratories across the UK. This role is in high demand in both public and private sectors.
You’ll also be well-positioned to progress onto a Level 5 Dental Technician Apprenticeship—a qualification that allows you to register with the General Dental Council (GDC) and further specialise in the field.
