This Level 3 Extended Diploma (Year 1) introduces you to the world of creative practice across photography, graphics, and visual communication. You will explore how creative ideas are developed, tested, and refined, while building a strong foundation in the techniques and processes used by professionals in the industry.

Throughout the year, you will work on a range of creative projects that allow you to experiment with different materials, methods, and approaches. You’ll learn how to generate ideas, solve creative problems, and communicate your intentions through your work.

This first year is designed to help you explore your strengths and interests across creative disciplines, while developing the confidence, skills, and understanding needed to progress further and begin to specialise in your chosen area.

What experience and skills will you gain?

You will develop a wide range of creative, technical, and professional skills, including:

  • Understanding and applying the creative process from idea generation through to final outcome
  • Exploring photography, graphic design, and visual communication techniques
  • Using a range of materials, tools, and digital software safely and effectively

    After successfully completing Year 1, you will typically progress into the second year of the Extended Diploma, where you will begin to specialise further in your chosen creative area. On completion of the full Extended Diploma, you may progress to:

    • University courses in Photography, Graphic Design, or Visual Communication
    • Art and Design Foundation Diplomas
    • Apprenticeships or training in creative industries
    • Entry-level roles or freelance work in areas such as photography, design, media, or marketing
