At South Bank Colleges, we take immense pride in the achievements of our apprentices and this week, we are delighted to share a standout example of just how quickly talent can flourish with the right support and opportunity.

Yesterday, one of our dental technician apprentices successfully created a Hawley retainer, a custom orthodontic appliance typically worn by patients after fixed braces are removed. What makes this accomplishment particularly remarkable is not just the quality of the final piece, but the journey behind it.

After being shown the process just once, she independently completed all of the wire work with confidence and precision. Demonstrating both creativity and initiative, she also selected the colours and overall design herself, producing a finished retainer that reflects both technical skill and personal flair.

Even more impressive is the fact that she has been an apprentice for just over six months.

This achievement highlights the strength of hands on learning and the value that apprentices can bring to the workplace from an early stage. With the right training and guidance, apprentices rapidly develop practical skills, contribute meaningfully to real projects, and offer fresh perspectives that benefit the wider team.

For employers, this is a powerful reminder that investing in apprenticeships is not simply about future potential, it delivers tangible value from day one.

Investing in the Next Generation

As we look ahead, we are excited to welcome a new cohort onto our Level 5 Dental Technician Apprenticeship, starting in October 2026. With only 12 places available, this programme offers a unique opportunity for dental laboratories and employers to nurture emerging talent while strengthening their workforce.

By taking on an apprentice, organisations can:

  • Build a pipeline of skilled technicians tailored to their business needs
  • Support professional development within the industry
  • Enhance productivity through practical, work based learning
  • Contribute to the future of dental technology
