At South Bank Colleges an inspiring story is taking shape as student Bukky reflects on his return to education and the progress he has made in only a few months. His journey is one of growth, resilience and renewed confidence as he settles into a learning environment that supports his ambitions.

During a recent lecture he paused and realised how far he had come, saying, “Wow. I have really noticed how much I have grown.” Although support from the learning support team is available whenever he needs it, much of his work is now completed independently. For him, this feels like a major step forward. “Knowing that I am now able to study on my own most of the time, while still having support when I need it, feels great.”
Bukky speaks positively about the encouragement he receives at South Bank Colleges. “I am over the moon that South Bank Colleges are letting me take things at my own pace and are so supportive whenever I need help.” Studying travel and tourism has given him a clear sense of purpose, and he is excited to build a career in a field that allows him to work with people from many different backgrounds.
Returning to study at 32 has also highlighted how much education has changed for the better. “Being 32 and studying again has shown me how much the college education system has changed — a hell of a lot. College and university are great for people like me. We often succeed in lessons that genuinely attract our attention and interest.”
He also offers strong advice to younger learners. “Do what you love. And if you fall out of love with it, move on and explore something new. It is never too late to start again. There is nothing wrong with being a late starter — you are still in the race.”
In his first months on the travel and tourism course, Bukky has already developed a solid understanding of the industry. Learning the difference between a travel agent and a tour operator has helped confirm the direction he wants to pursue. He explained, “Learning these differences has really helped me understand the industry better and given me a clearer idea of the kind of travel career I want to pursue.”
Bukky’s story is a powerful reminder that education is open to everyone at any stage of life. His progress continues to inspire fellow learners across South Bank Colleges.
