A group of South Bank Colleges students recently returned from an enriching work experience trip to Malta, where they combined hands-on learning in their chosen industries with the adventure of living and working abroad.

The trip offered students invaluable opportunities to apply their classroom knowledge directly in the workplace while also gaining independence, cultural awareness, and essential life skills. Living in shared apartments, they learned to manage their daily routines, from cooking and cleaning to budgeting and time management — vital skills that will serve them well in both their personal and professional lives.

Real-World Experience in Industry

Plumbing students worked at be.HOTEL, a 4-star hotel in St. Julian’s, where they acted as on-call maintenance professionals. Their responsibilities ranged from responding to electrical and plumbing issues to handling emergencies and ensuring the smooth operation of the hotel’s facilities. They also gained experience with Cast, a property company managing apartments across Malta, where they helped maintain existing properties and supported the construction of new ones.

Graphic Design students undertook equally exciting placements. At the Nom Nom Hotel, they contributed to the launch of a new hotel and beach club, designing menus, logos, and branding materials. Their work impressed management so much that it will now be used permanently, creating a lasting legacy for our students. Some were even offered commission to continue supporting projects remotely from the UK.

Other graphic design students had the chance to work in the field of architecture, where they expanded their digital design skills and gained experience in industry-standard software. For Layla, an aspiring architect, the opportunity was a dream come true and a significant step toward her future career goals.

Experiencing Maltese Culture

Beyond their professional placements, students immersed themselves in Maltese life and culture. They explored the dramatic Dingli Cliffs, relaxed on the golden sands of Golden Bay Beach, and took a boat trip to the breathtaking Blue Lagoon. The combination of hard work, exploration, and cultural exchange made the experience both rewarding and memorable.

A Lasting Impact

The trip has left a deep impression on all who took part. Students spoke of how much they missed Malta as soon as they returned home, reflecting the strong bonds and unforgettable memories created during their time abroad.

South Bank Colleges is incredibly proud of the dedication, professionalism, and creativity shown by its students throughout this journey. Experiences like this highlight the transformative power of education, giving young people the chance not only to develop their skills but also to grow in confidence and broaden their horizons.

We look forward to continuing to provide life-changing opportunities such as this for students across our campuses.
